Hi, I’m Cathy Diez-Luckie. I am the author and illustrator of the award-winning Famous Figures series of activity books. I am dedicated to providing parents and teachers with engaging hands-on history activities that excite even a reluctant learner!

I wanted the study of history to be fun and memorable for my children so I designed a series of books that they could use to make articulated puppets of famous people.

History became more than a listening activity. During our reading time, they would color, cut out, and assemble a historic figure that we were studying. Sometimes they would have the figure ‘talk’ and tell the story of his or her life. We even had puppet shows. The figures were frequently taken out at play time and used by my children to tell intriguing stories.

My Books

My goal is to create meaningful and easy-to-use activities that will ignite a child’s interest in history and encourage them to want to learn more about the great men and women of the past. Our books cover ancient and medieval times, the Renaissance, the American Revolution, the Civil War period. Two books in process (scheduled for publication in 2017 and 2018) will cover the early modern times, and modern times.

Finding the right resources can be overwhelming. So I make sure that the figures fit in with the history curriculum you are using. I also include a reading list in each of book so you can easily find biographies that will introduce your child to historic men and women if you haven’t yet started a course of formalized study.

My books may also be copied for use in families with multiple children and are great for imaginary play for a variety of ages. For co-op or classroom use, an annual license is available.

I am also the author of Dinosaurs on the Move. It is an award-winning book of articulated dinosaurs that is a lot of fun for children. You can find all of my books here. I have been writing and illustrating books since 2003.

My Biography

I am a former Vice-President of Operations of Progressive Angioplasty Systems (later Vascular Therapies) and started my career as a research chemist at Raychem Corporation. I have a masters degree in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University.

I left the corporate world when my late husband and I adopted three children from Russia. I am a home educator and love to learn along with my children.

I founded the publishing company Figures In Motion, in 2006, and have authored and illustrated seven books so far. Several of my books have received multiple awards for design and educational excellence.
